This Advanced BC Nordic ski tour is a classic. As Klindt Vielbig says in his route description, “the Yellowjacket Trail is a challenge against which to judge your skiing skills, for most of them will surely be required before the tour is ended. If you can ski this trail with aplomb, you may consider yourself an advanced skier.”

Planned route is an out and back the full length of the Yellow Jacket Trail, approx 12 miles total- 6 out, 6 back.

Required gear: Backcountry Nordic skis – wider than 65 mm, metal edges, with kicker or full length skins

Trip plan:

  • Meet inside Mazama lodge 8:30am.
  • Head out on skis 9am.
  • Mile 2.3: We’ll check in at the West Yellowjacket/East Yellowjacket trail junction, this is a possible bail out/early return loop point.
  • Mile 5.9: Planned turnaround point is the PCT trail junction just above White River West – this is another potential bail out point (beg a ride back?)
  • Return the way we came, with slight variation at the end-
  • Mile 9.5: take the Tie Trail from the West/East junction to descend via the West Leg road.
  • Mile ~12: Back to lodge by 4pm.
