Ski Oregon’s Best! Anthony Lakes offers nearly 20 miles of groomed XC trails, plenty of ungroomed, backcountry terrain, and what may be the least expensive alpine ski area in the state.
With a 7100 foot base elevation, Anthony Lakes has some of the earliest, lightest and most consistent snow in Oregon. It’s a smallish, community-owned ski area, high on quality skiing and low on pretension.
We’ll spend four nights in a large house about 5 miles north of Baker City. The house has a fully equipped kitchen, five bedrooms and 1.5 baths, and beautiful views of the Elkhorn Mountains. The wintertime night skies in eastern Oregon are generally clear and gorgeous.
We will enjoy a variety of skiing opportunities. The alpine and Nordic areas are next to each other, so group members will be able to choose either. One day will also be spent exploring the backcountry, and if that’s not for you, the groomed trails and alpine options are always available. If you want to ski backcountry, make sure you have skills to turn and stop in powder terrain, sometimes amid trees. Metal edged skis and off-trail experience are essential.
