Winthrop, WA

All Abilities Ski
Picture yourself at the Methow Valley – the primo cross country ski area in the country – during your winter break! This is an outstanding, unique area ski center that is ideally suited for both classic track skiing and skate skiing (and snowshoeing). Methow Trails grooms over 200 kilometers (that’s 120 miles!) of cross-country trails through the communities of Winthrop and Mazama in northern Washington. Trail elevations range from 2,000 to 4,000 feet. The snow conditions and trail quality make the Methow Valley a skier’s dream.
We’ll stay in three well-equipped houses in downtown Winthrop (including the former mayor’s house!), providing the opportunity to ski and socialize with your fellow ONC-PDX friends. Plan for potluck dinners that we prepare in the various houses (Casa Bogart, Hoot Owl, and Waring House). Restaurants are always an option and are within skiing or walking distance along with grocery and convenience stores.
What makes this particular trip to Methow special is the time of year. We will plan a special New Year’s Eve party with traditional and non-traditional fare. We have often skied around town on New Year’s Eve at night!
If you have considered learning to skate ski, lessons are available at Sun Mountain and in Mazama. Usually, there is a unique ski demonstration of old-time skiers and their equipment on New Year’s Day and a chance to join in a ski parade around Mazama. For a break from skiing, there is even a wonderful ice skating rink in town!
If online sign up (in October 2022) shows the trip as full, please join the waitlist. There are almost always several cancellations so chances are very good you will be able to get on the trip. For additional information about this trip, please contact the leader.
